Eco Island is working alongside architects and property developers in providing opportunities for people to live in sustainable houses and invest in sustainable farm developments.
Eco Island proposes that a ferry from Lyttleton to Akaroa be put in place. This will be beneficial for tourism and assisting with planting projects. The ferry will also service the people living and working on the Banks Peninsula.
Currenlty less than 2% of natural forest on the Banks Penisula remains. At Eco Island we believe that in order to restore the natural ecology of the Banks Peninsula we must first generate income to finance the restoration planting. Eco Island proposes that hemp be planted as an intial cash crop. Hemp is suitable as a primary crop as it will handle the dry conditions, is fast growing earning quick yields and is the best organic insulation material in construction.
The potential future of hemp is huge. Hemp has many benefits such as insulation for houses, hemp oil is used in oil-based paints and in creams as a moisturizing agent, for cooking, in furniture, textiles, clothing and paper. Marijuana is also used as a medicine.
Once the hemp is harvested from the Banks Peninsula transporting the products will be made more sustainable due to Sail Boats carrying the cargo to the nearby Port of Lyttleton which is one of New Zealands biggest international ports.
Once the hemp industry is established other industries such as Manuka Honey and planting for biofuel and timber will take place. Communities will also become established which will provide jobs in tourism, hospitality and IT.
It is hoped that the world embraces the hemp trade as hemp is the ideal plant for restoring dry areas. It is also the number 1 cash crop in the world. If the world were to embrace hemp, areas such as the Middle East and Africa could set up hemp economies which will help them restore their environment.
